Cross-Stitch Pattern Generator

Upload an image and turn it into a cross-stitch pattern; each pixel becomes a stitch matched to the nearest DMC thread color, complete with a symbol chart, stitch counts, and a printable pattern.

How It Works

From Photo to Pattern
  1. Resize: your image is scaled down so its width equals the chosen stitch count; each remaining pixel becomes one cross-stitch.
  2. Color matching: every pixel is compared against a palette of DMC thread colors and matched to the nearest one using Euclidean distance in RGB space.
  3. Palette reduction: the most-used DMC colors are kept up to your "Max Thread Colors" limit, and remaining stitches are re-matched to that reduced palette; fewer colors are easier to stitch.
  4. Charting: each color is assigned a unique symbol so you can follow the pattern in black and white, just like a printed cross-stitch chart.
Reading the Chart
  • Each square on the grid is one full cross-stitch.
  • Bold grid lines mark every 10 stitches to help you count and keep your place.
  • The symbol chart view prints cleanly in black and white; the color blocks view shows how the finished piece will look.
  • The legend lists each DMC number, color name, symbol, and how many stitches of that color you need.
Fabric & Finished Size

Aida cloth is measured in "count" — the number of stitches per inch. A 14-count fabric fits 14 stitches per inch, so a 70 × 90 stitch pattern finishes at about 5 × 6.4 inches. Higher counts make smaller, more detailed pieces; lower counts are larger and easier on the eyes.

Tips
  • Simple images with bold shapes and few colors convert best; busy photos may look noisy at small grid sizes.
  • Start with a smaller grid width and increase it until you get the detail you want without an overwhelming stitch count.
  • Lowering the max color count reduces the number of thread skeins you need to buy and manage.
  • Everything runs in your browser — your image is never uploaded to a server.
Note: DMC color matches are approximations based on published thread RGB values; always confirm the final shade against a physical thread chart before buying.
